Welcome to Class 1 2021/22. The Class Teacher is Mrs McMahon and there are 31 pupils in this class.
This class is supported by Miss Hughes who teaches every Monday and Miss Lynch, who is our Teaching Assistant.
My name is Mrs McMahon and I’ve been teaching at Consett Junior School for many years now! I love music and play several instruments and I like to sing. I’ve also just started rowing again, something I used to do when I was younger. I’m not as fit as I used to be but hopefully will lots of practise and training I’ll improve my fitness so that I can race again next year. I also have two young children so I’m often out and about in the local parks and National Trust properties so you never know, I might bump into you on a weekend!
I’m really looking forward to meeting the new Class 1. I’ve heard lots of lovely things about you and I think that we’re going to have a fun year learning lots of new and exciting things. I know some of you will be nervous about starting your new school as we couldn’t have our usual visit day in the summer, but we’ll have a great first day as it’s only Year 3 and you’ll be able to explore the school and learn about what we do before the older children come back.
Our English work this term will be based on the books ‘Gorilla’ by Anthony Browne and ‘Stone Age Boy’ by Satoshi Kitamura. We will be using ‘The Fantastics’ (ideas for writing), ‘The Grammaristics’ (tools for writing) and ‘The Boomtastics’ (techniques for writing) to help us with our writing. Children will be given their spellings on a Monday to learn for their test the following Monday.
In Maths this term we are going to be developing our numeracy skills using the White Rose scheme. We will focus on place value, addition and subtraction and multiplication and division. We will also start Times Tables Rockstars after the half term, which will help develop our quick recall of our multiplication and division facts. We will have weekly tournaments in Times Tables Rockstars so you can go online at home, practise and try to beat your friends!
Our science topic this term is Animals including humans. We will be looking at what we need to survive and how our skeleton works. There are some fun investigations too.
We have two sessions of PE a week. Monday will be indoor PE and Thursday will be outdoor PE. Children will come to school in PE kit (Dark bottoms and white t-shirt) on these days. We will have a relaxing time doing yoga and will focus on improving our basic skills in our outdoor fundamental lessons. Then, at Christmas time we will learn a dance and move onto ball skills.
This term we learn about the Stone Age through to the Iron Age and we link our Art to this too. In DT we will explore different types of structures and then make a castle. We will be exploring different places in the UK for Geography which is always fun- do you know which County we live in and can you point to where we live on a map? If not you definitely will be the end of the topic! We use Purple mash for our computing so we will become familiar with this platform and then learn how to use coding, how to be safe online and how to use spreadsheets. In RE we learn about the Hindu religion and also what happens in Advent and in PSHE we will focus on our new beginnings and saying no to bullying and how we get on with our friends. This half term we will also have French lessons, learning the basics and having fun with games. Finally, in music we will be creating compositions and learning our Christmas songs too.
