Class 1

Welcome to Class 1 2020/21.  The Class Teacher is Mrs McMahon and there are currently 21 pupils in this class.

This class is supported by Miss Hughes who teaches every Monday and Mrs Shield, who is our Teaching Assistant.

About Me

My name is Mrs McMahon and I have been teaching at Consett Junior School for many years now! I love music and play several instruments and also like to sing. I love being out and about. I have two young children so through the last few months I have been exploring the local woodland, visiting the park and having fun at the National Trust sites.

I’m really excited to meet the new Class 1. I’m looking forward to hearing about what you’ve been up to during lockdown and also getting to know you! I’m excited for the year ahead as we have lots of lovely new topics that I’m sure we’ll have fun learning about.

English

Our English work this term will be based on the books ‘Gorilla’ by Anthony Browne and ‘Stone Age Boy’ by Satoshi Kitamura. We will be using ‘The Fantastics’ (ideas for writing), ‘The Grammaristics’ (tools for writing) and ‘The Boomtastics’ (techniques for writing) to help us with our writing.

Maths

In Maths this term we are going to be developing our numeracy skills using the White Rose scheme. We will focus on place value, addition and subtraction and multiplication and division. We will also start Times Tables Rockstars after the half term, which will help develop our quick recall of our multiplication and division facts.

Science

Our science topic this term is Animals including humans. We will be looking at what we need to survive and how our skeleton works. There are some fun investigations too.

History

Our science topic this term is Animals including humans. We will be looking at what we need to survive and how our skeleton works. There are some fun investigations too.

Art and DT

In Art will be finding out and exploring techniques used in prehistoric art. In DT this term we will be looking at different structures in our Castles topic.

Music

We will be learning about different sounds in music we will be practicing Christmas songs.

ICT

In ICT we will become more familiar with our online learning facility Purple Mash. Our topics include coding, online safety and spreadsheets.

French

We will introduce the children to greetings, asking and saying their name, counting, colours.

PE

We will be outside as much as possible this half term and will developing our athletic skills and will also be developing out relaxation skills in yoga. PE will be on a Monday and Thursday and children can come to school dressed in their PE clothes until such time that PE bags can be brought into school.

Challenge Time…

2020 year book challenge!

We’d love to see what you have all been up to since March and what you get up to this Summer, so we are setting you a challenge!  Design your own 2020 year book using photographs, diary entries, newspaper cuttings etc to bring in to school on our first day back.  The year book can be done electronically or on paper and it is totally up to you how much or how little you do.  All entries will receive a dip in the box and the best two year books from each class will receive a prize!

Lockdown Time Capsule

Hopefully before the end of term we will bury the time capsule in the school grounds. The capsule is part of a project run by Mark Wilkinson Photography. Photographs Mark has received will be printed and placed in the time capsule which will be buried for ten years.  To accompany the photographs we are asking the children to write a letter and place it in a sealed envelope. The letter can be about time in lock down, things children did, how they felt, anything they feel relevant. We do want the children to include the date, their age, their class teacher and their first name. But they must not include surnames, phone numbers or their address.

In 2030 we will dig up the capsule and all contents will form part of a history event for our future CJS children.
