Class 1

Mrs L McMahon

Welcome to Class 1 2023/24.  The Class Teacher is Mrs McMahon and there are 28 pupils in this class.

This class is supported by Miss Hughes who teaches every Monday and Mrs Wood, who is our Teaching Assistant.

About Me

My name is Mrs McMahon and I’ve been at Consett Junior School for many years! I have two children and spend most of my weekends watching them play football and swimming. When we have free time, I love to visit Durham, Beamish or Gibside. I love music, especially singing and playing in Orchestras but I don’t get to do that as much now. I like to go and watch musicals at the theatre. I have to say, watching the productions that we put on at school is always one of the highlights of my year I’m looking forward to next year, I’ll be full time which I haven’t been for a while so it will be nice to see the children every day. I had a great day meeting all the new children in Class 1 and can’t wait for the year ahead. We have some lovely topics and experiences lined up for the year and I’m looking forward to sharing them with the children.

English

In English we will be writing poetry about the things we didn’t do in the holidays! Also, looking at the book ‘The true story of the three little pigs’ and finishing with some Autumn poetry. After half term we will move onto ‘Stone Age Boy’ which is lovely to read after learning about the Stone Age in our History lessons.

Maths

In Maths we will be developing our numeracy skills using the White Rose scheme. We will focus on place value, addition and subtraction and multiplication and division. We will also start Times Tables Rockstars after the half term, which will help develop our quick recall of our multiplication and division facts.

Science

Our science topic this term is Animals including humans. We will be looking at what we need to survive and how our skeleton works. There are some fun investigations too.

PE

For the first half term the children will be taking part in Gymnastics (indoor) and fundamentals- improving their basic PE skills, then after the half term we move onto Dance (indoor) and Ball skills.

Other Subjects

History and Geography

We will be learning about the Stone Age through to the Iron age in History then after the half term we will start our topic ‘Exploring the UK’.

Art and DT – In Art we will be creating some cave paintings like those found from the Stone Age and then we’ll have a DT week where we design and make castles!

Music – We will be developing our singing techniques, singing like Vikings then we will be learning the songs for our Christmas show.

ICT – In ICT we will be doing some coding, online safety and finally spreadsheets.

French – We will introduce the children to greetings, asking and saying their name, counting, colours.

RE – The children will learn about How do Hindu’s worship and how and why Advent is important to Christians.

PSHE – We will be covering the topic ‘Being me in my world’ and ‘Celebrating Difference’ which coincides with Anti-bullying week.
