Outdoor Learning Library – getting out and reading!
We have been fortunate to be chosen as one of the Tesco Bags of Help scheme for May and June – we would love your help! Our project is outlined below:
Our project is aimed at developing the young people in our care as vibrant readers who love reading. By creating an outdoor space that is used for reading – it would be a space that could be used 365 days of the year…
As an ever expanding school we are limited with indoor space, every room is already used for teaching, we have no school library. The Bags of Help grant would enable use to purchase a log cabin that would be used to house a library and reading space. Currently we have no space in school that is quiet and allows the children to develop their love of reading.
The reading cabin would be a vibrant space, with a range of different forms of seating and comforts that would give all the children a bespoke place to read in peace and quiet.
It would be visually stunning, bright and airy, with natural light throughout the year – children will be able to access the space not only through the day, but before school and after school.
We already have parents who volunteer in school, the aim would be for them to help in this capacity further by supporting in our outdoor reading place, by listening to readers and supporting those who cannot always access a range of texts. We hope to encourage a wider range of volunteers by inviting local people into school to talk about their experience of Consett in the past, this space would be ideally suited to help develop this.
As a school our aim is to develop the whole child, but on occasion we are hampered by circumstance, a small outdated building – if successful in bidding for ‘Bags for Grants’ we would be able to open up a wealth of opportunity for our children.
